This is my You Have to Burn the Rope walkthrough.

CONTROLS:
RIGHT Arrow - Move right
LEFT Arrow - Move left
Space bar or Up Arrow - JUMP
Any other key - ATTACK

Wait until it says "Click to Start". Click.

You will fall down into a tunnel. Below you there will be some big writing that says "You Have To Burn The Rope". Under, as well as beside, there is some smaller text. Ignore the small text.

Press and hold the RIGHT Arrow on your keyboard. Let go of the RIGHT Arrow when you get under the text that says "1. There's a boss at the end of this tunnel". Read the Text.

Once you have finished reading, press and hold the RIGHT Arrow again. Let go when you get to the wall. On the other side of the wall there is text saying "2. You can't hurt him with your weapons". Read the text.

You may have noticed there is a wall in front of you, that you can't walk up. Simply JUMP and press the RIGHT Arrow.

If done correctly you should be above the text that says "2. You can't hurt him with your weapons". Continue until you get to the ledge. Don't worry, there is no fall damage. Press the RIGHT Arrow to fall to the ground.

Press and hold the RIGHT Arrow until you get to the text "3. To kill him you have to burn the rope above". Read the text. Press and hold the RIGHT Arrow until you fall of the ledge.

You will see some text below you that says "Have fun!". Read it. You will notice the music changes to a more ominous score, indicating that the boss is close. Press and hold the RIGHT Arrow until you fall of the ledge and come to a stairway above you. *Note the ledge you just fell from is too high to jump back onto, so there is no turning back now.

A wall should pop into existence behind you, the music should change, and the boss (and his life bar at the top of the screen) should appear. If none of these have happened, press and hold the RIGHT Arrow until the event occur.

The boss, known as Grinning Colossus should just be sitting there with his mouth open. If you go too close, he will shoot at you.

JUMP LEFT to land on the first ledge. JUMP RIGHT to get to the second ledge. You may have touched the fire during that jump. If you have, you will see that your character is now holding a stick with fire on it. The fire goes out eventually, so you have to move fast.

JUMP RIGHT until you are on the highest point of the ledge. JUMP LEFT to the third ledge. There is another opportunity to obtain the fire during this jump.

Continue JUMPing LEFT until you are on the highest point of the third ledge. Then JUMP RIGHT to the final ledge. During the jump, there was your last opportunity to obtain the fire.

If you missed the fire JUMP LEFT and fall back to the third ledge. JUMP RIGHT again onto the final ledge, passing through the fire. If you missed it again, repeat the process.

On the final platform, continue RIGHT until you fall down slightly. You will now be on a catwalk high above the floor you started on. JUMP RIGHT and you will find you are on the next platform of the catwalk.

JUMP RIGHT again to get to the third segment of the catwalk. On the right side of the screen, you will see a chandelier hanging by a rope. That is your objective.

JUMP RIGHT to get to the platform in front of the chandelier. JUMP RIGHT one last time. As long as your fire touches the rope nothing else matters. The chandelier will fall and kill Grinning Colossus. Even if you land on him it is okay, because you have infinite life.

If at any point you fell back to the ground, go LEFT back to the stairway, and repeat the process outlined in this walkthrough.

There are other methods of killing Grinning Colossus, but for the sake of simplicity, they will not be outlined in this walkthrough.

Once you have defeated Grinning Colossus, listen to the credit music, and think of how you're going to spend the rest of this day. Maybe watch a video, maybe press refresh and start again.

===================================DISCLAIMER==================================
I have decided not to allow websites other than Gamefaqs (www.gamefaqs.com),
IGN (faqs.ign.com), Gamerhelp (www.gamerhelp.com) & Gamespot (www.gamespot.com)
to host my FAQs from now on.
Please don't ask, because I will not grant permission. It's just that too many
sites don't keep their version of my FAQ up to date which makes for a lot of
hassle in my mailbox.
So if anyone sees this FAQ on any site other than those mentioned above, please
let me know and I will take care of the situation, thanks.

Just to make things crystal clear for some people, this FAQ is not to appear
anywhere at the following URLs:

(B) INTRODUCTION
###############################################################################

***IMPORTANT AUTHOR'S NOTE***

This guide covers the North American version of the game ONLY! I understand
that the European and Japanese versions of the game have extra features, dog
tags and other such changes. I can not verify these, nor do I plan to, they
will not be added to this FAQ. Someone who owns a copy of these versions of
the game will likely write a FAQ that covers these tags/changes.

Basically this guide gives you the locations for all 361 dog tags that can be
found in the game on the various difficulties. I also point out which ones are
particularly troublesome to get, and how to get them.

First I simply list the details for each tag as it is displayed in the special
menu of the game, then I give specifics for finding the difficult tags farther
down. I changed the format a little, with D.O.B first, followed by blood type,
then the person's name and finally where they are found.

###############################################################################
(C) STRATEGIES
###############################################################################

To get a dog tag you must hold up a guard which basically involves you sneaking
up behind them and drawing your gun (don't shoot it). Snake will yell
"FREEZE!" and the enemy will be at your mercy. This is easiest to do from
behind. Once you have the enemy in your control either hold X (with square
still held) or hold L1, this allows you to move around with your gun drawn.
Run to the front of the enemy and aim at his crotch or head. The enemy will
get scared and shake out his/her dog tag, and any other items if you continue
this.

When you hold up some enemies they will be too close to a wall or railing for
you to get in front of them. A good way around this is to hold L1 while you
have your gun drawn, then simply run in front of them. You will knock him
around a bit and after a second or two you will be in front of him and ready to
steal his tag.

You can also grab an enemy in your choke hold, drag him to a nearby area, let
him go and aim at him from there too. Also if you manage to put a guard to
sleep that you still need a tag from, you can pick him up and drop him many
times to speed things up a little. Or you can spray him with coolant.

However there are some enemies that I like to call "tough guys" and they won't
be scared of you and your gun. These guards will ask if you're really going to
shoot them, some will tell you outright to shoot them, and in either case they
may try to dodge your aim and quickly go for their own gun. The only way to
show these guys you mean business is to shoot them, but not kill them. So make
sure you hit them in the hand or leg possibly, then aim for their head or
crotch and they should give up their dog tag. Also you'll want to do this with
a real gun, not a tranquilizer, as that will put them to sleep and then when
they finally wake up, they'll give you their tough guy act again. I will
indicate which enemies are tough guys, below. Also when dealing with these
guards w/o a silencer make sure you tranquilize the other guards in the room
before you shoot him, otherwise they'll hear the shot. You can also point an
RGB6, Nikita Launcher or Stinger Launcher at them and they will give up their
tag without a shot fired.

###############################################################################
(E) TRICKY TAGS
###############################################################################

Here I will list how you get certain tags that you get in a way that may not be
obvious at first. Also many guards (though their numbers may be different)
have the same pattern on different difficulty levels. So if you know how to
get them on one difficulty then you'll know how to do it on another. For this
reason I'll ONLY describe how to get the same type of guard once, in the
earliest difficulty that he shows up in.

======
TANKER
======

Very Easy

000 - Once you've beaten Olga shake her body for the tag.

009 - When you first enter the room where this guard should be, he is not
there. He will show up patrolling here after you beat Olga or sometimes
when you enter the room from a different door.

011 - This guy is not in the room at first, but when you enter the food storage
area (with the boxes) he will come up the stairs. Get him before he
returns downstairs.

018 - You can hold this guy up from behind, then grab him and drag him right
into the room with the little statue. Now drop him and aim your gun at
him again. This guy only appears the first time you enter the engine
room so get him as soon as you see him!

019 - This guy enters the room that has the many C4 sensors shortly after you
do. Hide between the objects in the middle of the room, and get him at
your own leisure. This guard will only show up once, so get him then.

Normal

005 - Not here immediately, appears after fighting Olga.

=====
PLANT
=====

Very Easy

000 - Use your punch/kick combo to knock snake out. Then shake his body for
the tag. Each time you knock him down he will get angry and try to use
the same combo on you. But you can cartwheel out of the way at the last
second to dodge his blows.

003 - Not here at first, appears once you've been to Strut A Pump Room.

005 - Appears after you fight Fortune.

007 - This guard is a one-timer, but he's not a tough guy so just take him out
the first time you go to the AB bridge and you should be fine.

008 - Appears after talking with Stillman.

009 - Appears after talking with Stillman.

010 - Appears after you fight Fatman.

011 - Appears after talking with Stillman, exit the room and re-enter.

012 - Appears after talking with Stillman, exit the room and re-enter.

014 - Appears after you fight Fatman.

018 - Appears after you fight Fatman.

020 - Appears after you save Emma with the PSG1, in the room with the DG
Camera.

024 - Appears after talking with Stillman.

025 - Appears after talking with Stillman.

036 - Appears when you bring Emma here.

039 - Appears when you bring Emma here.

040 - Appears when you bring Emma here.

041 - Appears when you bring Emma here, close to the east exit.

Easy

007 - This enemy only shows up once, so get him the first time.

Normal

004 - This tough guy may also be a one-timer, so tranquilize him, then when you
get your socom from Plisken rush back here.

005 - This tough guy may also be a one-timer, so tranquilize him, then when you
get your socom from Plisken rush back here.

047 - Appears once you bring Emma in the room. He will come down the elevator
so make sure you hide Emma somewhere else, like the spot to the right of
the elevator.

Extreme

031 - This guard is in the room where you get your AKS-74u (LVL2 door).

###############################################################################
(F) REWARDS
###############################################################################

DG (Digital) Camera - Lets you take piuctures and save them to your memory
card. You can find it in the parcel room in Strut E, it's down the stairs in
that room and you need a LVL 5 card to get it. You can also use box 5 on the
conveyor belts in the parcel room to get taken to the room with the camera.

Bandana - Gives you infinite ammo when you have it equipped. It can only be
used in the tanker stage on any difficulty. You need around 30 tags from the
tanker to get it.

Stealth - When equipped you are invisible to all enemies, even cameras. You
can earn one on the tanker stage, and one in the plant. You need around 60
tags from the tanker to get its stealth, and around 120 tags from the plant to
get its stealth. Each stealth can only be used in its respective stage.

Infinite Wig (Brown) - Gives you infinite ammo when you have it equipped. It
can only be used in the plant stage on any difficulty. You need around 80 tags
from the plant to get it.

Infinite Grip Wig (Orange) - Gives you an infinite grip meter when you have it
equipped. It can only be used in the plant stage on any difficulty. You need
around 160 tags from the plant to get it.

Infinite Air Wig (Blue) - Gives you an infinite supply of air when you have it
equipped. It can only be used in the plant stage on any difficulty. I think
you need around all the tags in the game to get it. The wig is really ONLY
useful when you're underwater.

Bonus Website - When you get every tag in the game you are given the URL to
part of Konami's website. Here you will find wallpapers, icons and sounds for
your computer (these list are also supposed to be updated), you need to enter
your ID, Password and Clear Code to get in.

The URL is [www.konamijpn.com]

###############################################################################
(G) TIPS
###############################################################################

Here are a few extra helpful things to know:

On Easy mode the M9 can be found in the room where you start, in the vents.

On Normal mode the M9 can be found on the upper floor of the Strut F Warehouse.
It's in the only door that you don't need a keycard to open.

You cannot get any of the rewards (except the DG camera) by beating the game
once. You need to save your game once you have beat it. Then load that save,
NOW you are given the option to start again on a different difficulty (but
keeping all the tags that you've got so far).

On every difficulty it seems that there is a one-time guard on the AB
connecting bridge (plant). However it seems that you have a second chance to
get this guard later on in the game, around the part where you get the guard
disguise he should be back.

You can check the name of any guard who's tag you already have by looking
through something that has a zoom function (camera, scope, PSG1, PSG1-T) and
holding triangle. This is also helpful for finding out who's tags you don't
have yet, as no name will appear on these guards.

(I) EXPERIMENTAL
###############################################################################

For a little while now I've had a paypal link in all my FAQs at the very bottom
here. Mainly as a small experiment since a few other FAQ authors have also had
the same idea.

I had a few people email me before I put this link in because they wanted to
send money, so it's here for those people.

For the record I've received about $87 (which works out to a bit more in
Canadian lol) last I checked, so I've been getting cases of pop and making some
excellent progress on a few FAQs.

If you don't want to send money or can't then send me an email, it's nice to
hear what people thought about my work and there's always room for improvement.

My email address is fecalord (AT) gmail (DOT) com, and the paypal address is
listed below.

For those that want to contribute, you can use paypal at the following address:

fecalord2002 (AT) yahoo (DOT) ca

Many thanks, and I hope you continue to use my work!

Walkthrough for the greatest title of all time: You Have To Burn The Rope.

1) Click this link: [www.kongregate.com]
2) Once the page has fully loaded, click where it says "Click to Start".
3) Use the arrow keys to move and jump. Get to the end of the tunnel. The path will close behind you.
4) Go up either side of the level and jump to the top. You will grab fire on your way up. Jump to the middle and light the chandelier's rope on fire. (YOU HAVE TO BURN THE ROPE!)

Congratulations, you did it! If you messed up, don't worry, the boss, the Grinning Colossus, can only stun you. Just jump back up and burn the rope.

Enjoy the song!
